I have never been a big fan of the 2004 Cote Rotie Brune et Blonde. It’s a good wine, but it is too peppery and herbaceous, to the point of being almost vegetal. Only about 20% new oak is used in the upbringing of this cuvee, but the wine is never fleshed out to the extent that most Guigal wines are with his long, extended barrel aging program. While competent, it is not one of this estate’s great successes. Robert Parker

This is rather gutsy for a 2004, with notes of beef, dark olive and tobacco holding sway over the dark cherry and currant core. The smoky finish shows lots of tobacco and olive notes. Drink now through 2020. 30,000 cases made. James Molesworth
